Matching memories with current games

When interviewed at GDC 2016 about his latest game Thimbleweed Park Ron Gilbert (Maniac Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge) said this:

“We want to make a game that is like your memories of those games. If you go back and play Maniac Mansion or Monkey Island now, they’re kind of crappy, and not necessarily as you remember them at all. We want to make a game like the thing that you remember rather than the thing that you played.” Ron Gilbert, GDC 2016

And this is the most accurate and somehow beautiful thing I read in a long time. Mostly because it’s so spot on. Just take a look at the picture at the start of my post. I matched a C64 Maniac Mansion screenshot with a Thimbleweed Park Wallpaper. From my memory that shouldn’t look that „bad“.

But it is an old game. But my memories really play tricks on me and on you too. If you look at the Thimbleweed Park blog you can see that Ron and his companions are really aiming at making his statement true. And I am very certain that they can do this. I just can’t wait for the game to make it into the wild.

Hell, maybe I can beat this one without any walkthrough tips. ;)

PS: I backed Thimbleweed Park on Kickstarter with the „I pirated Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island when I was a kid and I feel bad!“ tier. This alone is hilarious as hell :)

„I pirated Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island when I was a kid and I feel bad!“ This reward tier instantly absolves you of all guilt and includes the Thimbleweed Park game. All subsequent tiers also include guilt absolution.
