Good bye little one.

Power Drive 2000.

Am 22.02.2017 kam das bisher letzte Update:

BRB. Chit-chatting with lawyers. Fun times. #indiefriendly

Schade.

Scorn Part 1 of 2: Dasein

„Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe, designed around the idea of „being thrown into the world“. Isolated and lost inside this dreamlike world, you will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion.“ – https://scorn-game.com/

You take a piece of puzzle solving, a piece of shooter, add some music and a truckload H. R. Giger style graphic and you get Scorn. Ever since I heard fist about it when they started sponsoring Easy Allies (a video game YouTube/Twitch/Podcast crew) they had my interest. When they came to Kickstarter in September 2017 I had to get on board. And now they delivered a solid little Demo which really shows the atmosphere in the game. It’s rather short but I needed 4 runs to complete it. It’s no „run and gun“ game what so ever. I made some screenshot which you can see below.

At the time of writing the Kickstarter is still running (ends Tue, October 10 2017 6:53 AM CEST.) And I really think you should back it ;)

Last, but not least some presskit screenshots from Ebb Software themselves.

3D Drucker, Fräse und Lasergravur in einem Gerät. Snapmaker

Hersteller: http://www.snapmaker.com/

Smach Z Kickstarter

So the Smach Z I stumbled upon at GamesCom (read here) has finally launched it’s Kickstarter. A few weeks later than I was told at their booth but that’s ok. Nobody wants a rushed Kickstarter.

At first glance I find this thing really attractive. But after a second look there was a certain „wtf?“ Moment. Where to start? Let’s go with the obvious: price.

The Smach Z comes in two flavours. „Smach Z“ and „Smach Z Pro“ costing 299 Euro respectivly 499 Euro. That’s a lot of money. This, on it own, is a hard pill to swallow but when you look at the specs of the two Versions, it get’s worse. The lower end model has only 4GB RAM and a very tiny 64GB HDD. That’s hardly enough for the Windows 10 installation (which only will be supported if the campaign reaches 350.000 Euro). The Pro getting LTE Support, 8GB RAM and 128GB HDD is more like it could be working but for 500 Euro you can build a descent PC.

smachz_specs

While I mentioned the „Windows 10 support“ stretch goal, here is another one: 1080p display at 300.000 Euro. But how can that be? The specs already proclaim a 6″ fullHD display? I’m guessing the guys and girls at Smach are just so confident that they will hit that mark that they didn’t bother correcting the specs. Same with Windows 10. „When pre-ordering SMACH Z you can choose between Windows 10 or Linux.“ Good luck with that if it stays below 350.000 Euro.

smachz_strechgoals

And now the fun part. Imagine the Kickstarter will stay just below 300.000 Euro. You’ll get a 720p display and no official Windows 10 support. No big deal, games will run smoother on 720p won’t they? Sure but looking at some benchmark Smach provided things get kind of ugly. Literally. The benchmarks are made with a setup similar to the PRO version so they can’t be applied to the basic version at all. Be aware of that you will get a much lower performance! And the test setup runs Windows 10. (NOT SUPPORTED YET! Remember the 350.000 Euro stretch goal?) Just look at the list. Most tests are run at 720p and some still drop below 30 FPS.

smachz_benchmark

So now what? From a pure technical point this thing is an expensive toy for casual gamers with spare cash who travel a lot. Is it an alternative to 3DS, Vita or a gaming laptop? No. But check the Kickstarter out, read all the text and make up your own opinion. I really think the team behind this wants to deliver. If they wouldn’t they would not have gone such lengths like going to GamesCom and show a (sometimes) working prototype months prior so the start of Kickstarter. Asking the community about screen size and resolution. And they are very open on their development process. Just look at the cooling or the prototyping:

So please go to Kickstarter and spread the word.

Und was man da alles findet.

Was macht man nun damit. Verkaufen? Verstauben lassen? Verschenken? Entsorgen?

Dark Souls™ – The Board Game

Eure Meinung?

WARTILE Canceled – A Momentary Farewell

That’s some News to wake up to. Michael Rud Jakobsen wrote on behalf of Playwood Project ApS:

Unfortunately, we are today in a situation where we have to consider and realize the harsh truth that it’s very unlikely that we will reach the campaign’s main goal. There’s much to consider and there’s many reasons as to why this may be the case and we have already learned a lot, both about our community and about how WARTILE is seen by those who didn’t back the project.

„Unlikely“ is not „impossible“ and since day one I had an eye open on Kicktraq to see where it’s going. And my guess was „it will be close, but they’ll make it“. Mostly because most Kickstarter projects gain momentum in the last 3 days.

But that probably the problem when hitting the goal just by a bit: there is no room for fault tolerance. We had this problem with another Kickstarter. Rocket Ranger Reloaded had a goal of $89,999 and got $90,715. But they didn’t really get $90,000 as an update on the 21st september 2015 told us:

We reached the goal but not far beyond our target. Also we did not get some bigger payments from backers from the higher levels. We lost about 30k on money that we did not get (Credit cards payment where refused). But we still had to pay Kickstarter and Amazon Fees. [Sven from Cinemaware]

Simple math: one third missing. That’s a chunk of change. And I guess that is the reason for Wartile being cancelled. Just a too big risk.

I, for my part, hate seeing that project being let go and „going dark“ but I hope the guys at ApS get their feet on the ground. Michael Rud Jakobsen ends his note with this:

Again we are sad and incredibly sorry to disappoint all of you backers, and everyone else who believed in us, but going forward, we take with us a lot of knowledge about ourselves as developers and of WARTILE as a game. Be sure that we will rise again, stronger and better as we aim at the future.

Until we meet again, do keep spreading the love for cool projects.

So go and subscribe to their newsletter, follow their Facebook and Twitter accounts or email them if you want to happen to have $100,000 laying around. ;) Or maybe Daniel Kayser can help. He’s Product Marketing Manager at Unreal Engine.

WARTILE – Figurine Customization

One of the major plus points of a physical miniatures games is customizing your miniatures. In most video game adaptations of miniature wargaming I’m aware of this is reduced to changing a colour scheme. Maybe switch a weapon. But it’s all cosmetic most of the time.

But in Wartile it will also change stats and you can do more than mere colour changes. The developer says:

In WARTILE, you’ll be able to customize your figurines with different weapons, shields and armor pieces, both to make them look unique and cool, and to change their overall combat stats so that they can be more defensive or more offensive, depending on the task at hand.

So we are getting a cool WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor with an animated stats preview. I like that a lot. Just take a quick look at their video:
